the mitochondrian is the cell organelle in which cellular respiration takes place and energy is produced during cellular respiration by break down of glucose in presence of oxygen to for energy units known as ATP ( adinosine tri - phosphate) molecule.

since it produces energy it is known as powerhouse of the cell.
