Why do you think the narrator fails to rescue K? What else does the narrator have problems doing?

Rather simply the narrator failed to save K. because he was simply scared. He tried to warn K. but when the killer wave he was simply overtaken by fear and thought about saving himself. Murakami effectively and in a heart wrenching manner shows us what can happen when fear overtakes us.
