How did the domino theory explain american involvement in southeast asia?

When you put dominoes in a row and you knock one down, all others fall down one by one. It was believed that this was how communism would spread across the South East Asian region. If Vietnam fell down then all other countries around it would follow and soon all of Asia would be communist. The United States wanted to stop this.
